Shingle Calculator
Calculate how many shingle bundles and roofing squares you need. Enter your roof dimensions, select the pitch, and get exact material quantities with cost estimates.
What Is a Shingle Calculator?
A shingle calculator estimates the number of roofing squares and shingle bundles needed to cover a roof. It uses your roof footprint dimensions and pitch to calculate the actual roof surface area, then converts that area into ordering quantities.
Roofing materials are sold by the "square" — a unit equal to 100 square feet of coverage. Standard 3-tab and architectural asphalt shingles ship 3 bundles per square. The calculator accounts for roof pitch (which increases surface area beyond the flat footprint) and waste factor.

Common Mistakes
- Ignoring pitch. A 6/12 pitch adds 11.8% more area. A 12/12 pitch adds 41.4%. Calculating from footprint alone underestimates materials.
- Not adding waste. Cutting shingles at ridges, valleys, and edges produces waste. Budget 10-15% extra.
- Forgetting accessories. Ridge caps, starter strips, underlayment, drip edge, and ice & water shield are separate purchases.
- Wrong bundle count. Standard shingles are 3 bundles per square. Some specialty shingles are 4 or 5 bundles per square.
Pro Tip: Order 1-2 extra bundles beyond the calculated amount. Keep leftover shingles for future repairs. Shingle colors vary between production runs, so having matching extras from the same lot saves time later.
